When “No thanks” means “Okay”

Today someone tweeted a link to their friend’s Etsy shop. I clicked on the link, landed at the Etsy shop, and noticed an overlay in the footer that said:

Hi! We'd like to set these regional settings for you: English (US), $ United States Dollar USD, United States : (Okay) (No thanks)

I saw this and thought to myself: I prefer English (UK) when I have a choice, I prefer $ Australian Dollar AUD, and I’m in Australia. I tried to click on the text but it wouldn’t let me change any of the options so I clicked “No thanks” and expected it to go away. Instead the overlay was replaced with another letting me know that my preferences had been saved. What?! I’d said “No thanks”!

Your preferences have been saved. You can always update these regional settings later at the bottom of any page.

There are a couple of flaws here:

  • Etsy gave me the impression that I had options.
  • Etsy gave me options that did not match my needs.
  • Etsy offered me a choice to decline the options and then ignored my choice.

What Etsy could have done:

  • Not shown me an overlay and defaulted the site to English (US), $ United States Dollar USD, and United States. If I had reached the point where I was interested in buying I may have noticed the options to switch over to $AUD, or I could have been given a specific option when I was about to make a purchase. This isn’t ideal because I could be put off browsing products if I don’t have a good sense of the exchange rate.
  • Shown me the overlay without a “No thanks” button – it would have forced me to click “Okay” but at least I wouldn’t have felt like I had any other option.
  • Shown me the overlay and allowed me to adjust the settings in-line with the message.
  • Shown me the overlay but matched my IP address or browser settings to have a better guess at which settings I might like to have. This can be a problem as there are many reasons why an IP address/browser will not match a person’s preferences but at least it has a chance of being a little more accurate than defaulting everyone to be American. In combination with the suggestion above to provide in-line settings, I could have adjusted the options if they were wrong.
  • Shown me a different message when I clicked “No thanks” such as “We have left your settings at our default options of English (US), $ United States Dollar USD, United States. You can always update these regional settings later at the bottom of any page.”

From what I can see of the language, currency and region options that are available when you click on the link at the bottom of any Etsy page, Etsy appears to be in the process of rolling out new options for different countries and languages. It takes effort to provide that level of service on a site, however not providing clear instructions in the overlay they currently show is missing the mark and is failing to promote the options that are available.

All in all this is a minor gripe as taking a bit of care with small interactions like this isn’t going to save the world, however attention to detail can impact brand perception and the roll-out of grand plans.

Planes, bikes and taxis

I spent two days doing research in Melbourne last week. In between sessions I made some observations:

Distractions make time fly

On the way to Melbourne we were on a Qantas A330 which appeared very fresh, shiny and new. At my seat I got to play with “Q” (the Qantas audio and video on demand system) for the first time. My “Q” decided to crash during the safety demonstration and proceeded to take a few minutes to reboot. Once it was running again I poked and prodded it for a while and despite some touch-sensitivity issues, I found a large selection of content (music, videos, games, information) and settled in to watch a short documentary about Ikea.

“Q” provides a lot of options for a range of interests and I felt spoiled for choice and could quite easily have kept on flying to watch and play some more. It would be nice to see the system on more domestic flights.

Bike share scheme

There are a few issues with the Melbourne bike share scheme, one of them being the law that people must wear helmets when riding a bike. Originally the scheme expected people to bring along their own helmet when hiring a bike which was a deterrent for the casual rider (why would you own a helmet if you don’t own a bike?) and for the tourist rider (packing or buying a helmet is not usually part of the holiday regime). In October 2010, the city started selling subsidised $5 helmets at stores near the bike racks which appears to have increased the take-up of the bike scheme however longer term provision of the helmets requires more government money.

I watched the bike racks as a pair of girls spent a bit of time checking out the bikes and deciding to use them. One of the bike share scheme assistants spoke to the girls briefly before they finished their preparation and rode off with their hair blowing in the wind.

I didn’t understand the space when, a few years back now, I first wandered in to Federation Square. Perhaps I saw it on an off-day, or it has just needed some time to find its feet, but I find it promising and beautiful that in a city the size of Melbourne this open space is so casually used by people.

I saw people sitting down to watch the Australian Open tennis on the big screen, others were eating at the cafes, drinking at the bars, waiting for friends, wandering to the galleries, working away in the SBS offices, and some were doing a photoshoot for handbags while others lounged around them.

Taxis are cheaper in Melbourne

During our travels I noticed that the price of taxis seemed to be cheaper than in Sydney. Based on information I’ve found since then for NSW taxi fares and Victorian taxi fares, day-time fares without the use of tollroads are indeed lower in Melbourne:

Sydney: $2.20 booking fee + $3.30 flag fall + $1.99/km
Melbourne: $2.00 booking fee + $3.20 flag fall + $1.617/km

For a phone-booked day-time taxi journey of 20km, you’d pay $45.30 in Sydney and $37.54 in Melbourne. That’s a fair difference in my eyes.

Qantas helped us get home faster

I checked-in online for our return flight but without a printer we had to use a check-in kiosk at the airport to get our boarding passes. Rather than simply spit-out our boarding passes, the kiosk suggested that we could switch to an earlier flight and even prompted me that my requested vegetarian meal might not be available if we change flights. Getting home earlier was a higher priority than getting a meal so we were happy to take that option.

When the boarding passes came out, mine even included the note about my meal (and no, due to the time between the switch and the flight boarding, my meal didn’t make it, but there was enough vegetarian food on the dinner meal tray to keep me happy).

Part 4 of my intercom system whine.

Tonight I decided to take a closer look at what’s on the other end of my intercom and I’m even more perplexed by the choice of system.

Outside my building’s front-door is a large stainless-steel vertical panel (in this picture I’ve managed to chop off the top): video camera, a row of lights and icons, a screen, some buttons with dots on them, a number pad, and some other strange black block with a pretty design (a swipe key reader perhaps? we have a separate one of those already).

I pressed in my apartment number and it buzzed my apartment. It works that easily. What are all the other buttons for?

I gave the system a bit of a poke. In the middle of the panel, the four buttons with dots seem to be associated with the options at the bottom of the digital screen (so why are they visually grouped with the number pad?). All four buttons allow you to access menus that list the apartments… by Unit number: Unit 101, Unit 102, Unit 103, etc, in reverse order if you try the Z-A option, or by search. This A-Z and search feature might be useful for an office block to locate businesses but it’s useless for an apartment block where residents don’t want to be listed by name (and thankfully we’re not… for now at least, and I’ll be complaining if that happens).

The little blacked out bit at the top of the digital screen is where the building name appears (which is already shown around the building’s entry). The manufacturer on the other hand, BPT Group, take up almost half of the screen with their logo (pointless).

When I was looking at the panel I’d thought that the time had been incorrectly set. Looking at the photo now I realise that the “0″ in “06:44″ had made me think it had been showing me an AM time even though I was checking it out in the evening. “06:44″ meant 6:44pm. Of course. Why does an intercom need a visible date and time anyway?

I could keep complaining, but I’ll finish with the funniest thing that puzzled me – why is there a button with a guillotine icon on it?

That was my immediate thought while I looked over the buttons and it took me a good few seconds staring at it to realise it is actually an open door. Poorly presented and again a useless button for our building considering a person wanting to gain entry has to have someone on the inside press a button (oh, sorry, two buttons) to let them in.

The requirements, as I see them, for my building’s entry panel for the intercom system are:

  • the ability to buzz and talk with apartments
  • a video camera to feed to the intercom receivers in the apartments

This system meets those requirements but it has a lot of awkward and pointless bells and whistles (and guillotines) thrown in.
